The role of the military is to provide a strong national defense. Defense being the optimum word. I support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the United States against aggression. I support the offensive efforts to combat terrorism, but do not support the occupation and nation building of other countries. The United States should abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world and avoid entangling alliances.
As your Senator, I will advocate a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America’s founders. The principle of non-initiation of force should guide the relationships between governments. The protection of individual rights is the only proper purpose of government.
As your senator, I will seek an America at peace with the world and remain vigilant in our defense against attacks from abroad. I would end the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid. I recognize the right of all people to resist tyranny and defend themselves and their rights. I condemn the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by governments or by political or revolutionary groups.
“Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none.” – Thomas Jefferson
